Palmen

It is the natural need for warmth that draws us to the warm south on the increasingly cold days of winter. For some it is a longing thought, for others a short holiday and for some even several weeks or months in a holiday home in the Canary Islands, the Caribbean, Miami, the South Seas, Thailand, Morocco, South Africa or Australia. It is the desire for sun, vitamin D, a good mood, light clothing and a better attitude to life that awaits us here.

We are the last people to begrudge anyone this, but we want to give you something on your journey: the best, most sustainable UV protection. Our skin has developed a higher level of self-protection over the summer and is used to UV rays. With autumn, this decreases with each passing day and when we get off the plane in the middle of winter, our skin is pretty much defenceless in countries not far from the equator. The quickest, most visible sign is sunburn, which can ruin half your holiday after just a few hours. The most unpleasant thing is the dehydration of the skin, which over many years gives you a so-called sclera and unnaturally increases the formation of wrinkles.

Worse than these visual defects are the long-term consequences for your health. Every time you sunbathe, regardless of whether you get sunburnt or not, skin cells are destroyed. This destruction is unfortunately irreparable and increases your individual risk of developing skin cancer. You can avoid this by following these rules for healthy seaside holidays in winter:

  • Apply cream to your uncovered skin every day
  • Wear a hat, a cap that shades your head and face
  • Only wear certified UV-protective clothing, as cotton shirts offer little protection
  • Protect yourself even in the shade, as 50% of UV rays get through here too
  • Avoid the extreme midday sun from 11 am to 4 pm, especially in tropical areas
  • Only wear close-fitting UV protection in the water, as the waves reflect UV rays by up to 90 per cent. Even below the surface of the water, UV rays only become harmless after several metres of depth.
  • And if you want to keep your skin soft, moisturise it in the evening
  • The most important thing: enjoy your holiday, stay healthy and come back refreshed.
