The spring sun is underestimated
The Best Tips for Your Health
Dark and cold were yesterday: spring is approaching with big leaps. With it come delicate blossoms, green meadows, and finally, warming sun. This helps our immune system with the production of Vitamin D, lifts our mood, but also poses dangers. Human skin is like that of a child after the winter months: sensitive and exposed to UV radiation responsible for skin diseases, premature skin aging, and skin cancer. Gerd Nettekoven, Chairman of the German Cancer Aid, advises not to underestimate the sun: "Get your skin used to the sunny season slowly; protect yourself from intense UV radiation."

The invisible enemy irreparably destroys skin cells. The long-term consequence is the increasingly common occurrence of skin cancer. Almost 300,000 people are diagnosed annually in Germany alone – the actual number is much higher. "UV radiation alters the genetic material of skin cells and can lead to permanent cell damage. This happens long before a sunburn painfully drives us out of the sun," reveals Professor Dr. Eckhard Breitbart, dermatologist and chairman of the Dermatological Prevention Working Group (ADP).

UV protection needs to start at UVI 3
Many weather apps predict the UV index, the international unit for dangerous UV rays. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) explains that from a UVI value of 3 onwards, midday sun should be avoided, or appropriate protective measures should be taken. When cycling, walking, relaxing on the balcony, or in a street café, wear headgear and UV protective clothing, and apply sunscreen to exposed skin.
The German Cancer Aid published these spring tips:
- Get your skin used to the sun with short exposures
- Avoid high UV exposure
- Wear clothing and headgear
- Use sunscreen for uncovered skin
- Protect your eyes with sunglasses
- Take note of the UV index

Dermatologists and radiation researchers agree: the best, safest, and most comfortable protection is UV-certified clothing. iQ UV is one of the world leaders in sustainable UV protective clothing. The 2022 collection from the specialist in UV protection for leisure, vacation, and work offers a solution for all seasons. "In spring, it can be very warm at noon, but it quickly gets cool again in the evening," says iQ founder Markus Courtial, recommending "casual long-sleeved shirts that you can roll up during the day."
