The big holiday check 2023

Anticipation is rising; soon it's time for summer holidays.

For some, it's at home with a swimming pool, lake visits, and outings; for others, it's a journey to nearby or distant destinations. To ensure a successful vacation, whether here or there, we'll share the most important tips with you. Here comes the big holiday check!

Vacation in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, or the Netherlands

At home or in one of our European neighboring countries, the weather can be unpredictable. Nevertheless, from June to September, there's UV radiation everywhere that can surpass the limits, even in cloudy or shaded conditions. You should never wait until your skin is irritated or red because by then, your skin cells are already irreparably damaged. Anyone who has had a severe sunburn knows that it significantly diminishes the fun of the vacation.

What you need is a UV shirt and sunscreen for exposed skin areas.

Discover UV protection clothing

Dermatologists recommend at least SPF 30, applied generously for full protection. As a rule of thumb, plan for two packs of sunscreen per week of vacation. Also, when purchasing sunscreen, pay attention to sustainable packaging and avoid environmentally harmful ingredients. Manufacturers that produce responsibly are usually certified and highlight these benefits on their products.

The same applies to your UV-protective clothing: only get certified, sustainable, and ethically manufactured UV shirts or shorts. A small tip: most people think long-sleeved shirts aren't suitable for summer. Our research has shown that loosely fitted sleeves can have a cooling effect due to the evaporation of water and sweat. Plus, you can skip sunscreen on your arms. Enjoy your time at local lakes and swimming pools or by the Baltic or North Sea.

Vacation in the Mediterranean or a sunny destination

Naturally, the above tips also apply when it gets even hotter. However, you should be aware that in Germany, a UV index of about 10 is measured, while in countries like Spain, especially in Ibiza and Mallorca, Portugal, Italy, Greece, or Turkey, these values go higher. In destinations like the Caribbean, the Maldives, Seychelles, Morocco, Florida, or Australia, the highest measurement values are reached every day. Here are additional points to consider for a healthy vacation:

Wear tightly fitted and saltwater-resistant UV-protective clothing in the water, and definitely wear a UV cap or hat. Dermatologists generally advise against staying in the sun between 11 am and 3 pm. It's no coincidence that people in southern countries observe siesta during this time. Rest in your room or at least in the shade. But be cautious even in the shade: about 50% of UV rays still penetrate, so keep wearing protective clothing. To keep things from getting too dry, here's our checklist for a healthy and relaxing vacation:

  • Check entry requirements for your destination
  • Passport, ID (is it valid for at least 6 more months?)
  • All tickets for flights, ferries, transfers (take a photo if not already digital)
  • Cash in local currency, credit card
  • Travel pharmacy (get advice at your pharmacy tailored to the destination)
  • All charging cables needed for your devices
  • Holiday reading, recommendations: "Parents' Evening," "The Old World," or "The Corpse at Fastensee"
  • 2 head coverings with certified UV protection
  • Sufficient UV shirts, including long-sleeved ones if you can't wash them on-site
  • Water sports or swimwear also with certified UV protection
  • A UV leggings for swimming and snorkeling
  • And of course, for the evening, anything you fancy
