Sun protection tips in winter
Is UV protection important in winter?
We all know sun protection with cream, UV shirts, caps or sun hats from the hot summer. In the warmest season, protection from UV rays is certainly particularly obvious. But is this also the case or does our skin also need UV protection in autumn and winter?
Don't underestimate UV rays in winter
To answer this question, we need to put the facts on the table. Our skin is very sensitive in winter and hardly produces any melanin, which is responsible for tanning and self-protection. As you have not been able to build up your own protection for a longer period of time and your skin is pale and rather dry, you are almost defenceless against UV rays. However, the UV index is also low.
The risk of sunburn or skin cancer is now rather low, but the skin exposed to the sun can still change. Skin ageing and pigmentation disorders are typical consequences.
Holiday protection more important in winter than in summer
If you want to do something good for yourself and your skin and head off to the snow or the warm south at this time of year, your skin is in for a nasty surprise. Without much self-protection, it now receives the full load of UV rays, sunburn happens quickly, but even before that, individual skin cells are irrevocably damaged and destroyed.

Winter holiday in the snow
When doing winter sports or hiking in the snow, wear thick clothing to protect yourself. You should always shade your face with a hat or cap and apply a thick layer of sun cream with a high sun protection factor. And remember: white snow, like water, reflects UV rays by up to 90 per cent. And the higher your ski resort is, the higher the intensity of the ultraviolet radiation.
Winter holiday in the south
If, on the other hand, you choose the warm south, the Canary Islands, a Caribbean island, Cuba, Florida or Thailand, your skin doesn't stand a chance without your intervention. Here or the UV index is often higher than in the height of summer and you will need to wear UV protection. You should avoid the midday sun altogether and preferably seek shade.
